The Impact Technology Has on a Student/Is the Use of Technology in a Classroom Good? Technology has changed student productivity in a good way. Over the years, technology use has increased in the classroom, and it has changed the way students work. Recently, numerous schools have started to implement technologies such as iPad’s, Smart Boards, and other devices into their curriculum to help the students and increase productivity. Effectively, technology has expanded the way classrooms functions. Technology has brought both advantages and disadvantages to education; however, technology impacts students in a positive way. Student productivity has increased due to technology being implemented in a classroom. Student Productivity in a classroom†¦show more content†¦Carr explains, â€Å"Those who browsed the web performed much worse on a subsequent test of how well they retained the lecture’s content† (22). With this being said, this group of students exposed to technology had been distracted by technology and performed poorly on the test. In addition to Carr, in â€Å"Influence of University Level Direct Instruction on Educators’ Use of Technology in the Classroom,† Garner provides, â€Å"teachers highly skilled, and trained in technology, did not consistently integrate it in their classroom† (147). Although technology proves to have helped various students, it is not the same for all students. In this case, these professors excluded technology from their classrooms and managed to successfully teach a class. Not only is student productivity important when disc ussing the effects of technology on education, student focus also changes. In addition to student productivity, technology has provided help towards student focus. Being able to focus is often a struggle for students because they are often distracted by various things going on around them. Focus is a key to successful education, and if technology is distracting students then it should not be implemented. However, in various cases technology has proved its positive effect on students. The World Of Computer Programming - 887 Words

Douglas Braun was born in Cambridge Ohio, 1945. He has done a lot with his life so far and refuses to stop. He now runs a computer programming company called Internet Payment Exchange, righting computer programs for large business to transfer money. You might have said he was an exception to Outliers when he would barley pay attention in school but somehow know everything. Much like Outliers the more you examine the less of an exception they might be to Gladwell s book. 1949 Von Neumann had just invented the first computer programming language. As we learned form Outliers this was a long and grueling process with many hours spent writing and changing cards to complete your program. Then two years later in 1951 Grace Hopper invented the first compiler. A compiler turns Von Neumann s computer language into an easier form, there it can directly go into the computer without any manual work. This was amazing in the world of computer programming because of its speed and ease compared to the old language. It wasn t until 1957 that a big change came. The first major language of computer programming was here, in the form of FORmula TRANslating system, in short FORTRAN. FORTAN was almost its own language itself for computer programmers allowing them to do things they never could have when programming. For Douglas this is an obvious advantage being born in the perfect time era. Then in 1958 John McCarthy invented a LISP processing language. All Quiet on the Western Front by E.M. Remarque Free Essays

â€Å"This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession†¦ It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by the war† states Erich Maria Remarque in the very beginning of his most known novel All Quiet on the Western Front. This book blames the war on damaging young people and states how they will never adapt back to normal life and accuses people who don’t even fight in the war of starting it for no reason. The narrator of the story, Paul, talks about his experience with the war turning these sane men into heaps of madness, and how the war was completely unnecessary and does not do the country any good. We will write a custom essay sample on All Quiet on the Western Front by E.M. Remarque or any similar topic only for you Order Now Paul says while on leave, â€Å"Out there I was indifferent and often hopeless– I will never be able to be so again. I was a soldier, and now I am nothing but an agony for myself, my mother, for everything that is so comfortless and without end†.(p. 185) This evidence shows that the war causes the soldiers to feel uncomfortable with the world outside after the war. The war changes the soldiers into people who teach others to kill and don’t even know the reason. For example, one night while Paul volunteered for patrol, shelling started so he got into a shell hole to take cover. A Frenchman later jumps into the hole with Paul but Paul has to stab him. While in the hole with the Frenchman’s lifeless body Paul talks to him he says, â€Å"Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony–Forgive me, comrade; how could you be my enemy?†(p.223) this shows that even the soldiers don’t like the fact that they fight these people for no reason, that they all have rights as people and they all show fear so why would they fight each other. While on leave Paul speaks to two gentlemen who offer him cigars, while talking to the gentlemen one says, â€Å"but this relates to the whole. And of that, you are not able to judge. You see only your little sector and so cannot have any general survey. You do your duty, you risk your lives, that deserves the highest honor–every man.†, this shows that people who don’t even fight in the war think that they know more about what goes on than the soldiers who actually fight in the battle. Another way the book shows that the soldiers don’t want the war and that it only helps a select few takes place on page 206. One quote on this page reads † every full-grown emperor requires at least one war otherwise he would not be famous†¦ there are other people back behind there who profit from the war, that’s for certain.† this blames the government for needing a war because they believe it would make them go down in history as a great nation and that the war’s only purpose consisted of a government wanting too much power. â€Å"I think it is more of a kind of fever no one, in particular, wants it, and then all at once there, it is. We didn’t want the war, the others say the same thing– and yet half the world’s in it all the same.†(p.206) this quote comes up when Paul and his comrades talked about the significance of the war and why they fought the war. It states that the people never wanted or needed the war in the first place the government wanted to show that they had power. Remarque accuses the government with this statement because he writes about the people and the soldiers not wanting the war for many reasons such as food, materials, and money, but yet the war still took place. All in all this book accuses the war and the government of the death of these young men and for ruining their lives. The war did not need to take place and many people did not like the war. The war caused young men to get drafted and not have proper training on the battlefield causing more casualties. All of these things make All Quiet on the Western Front what remarque said it wouldn’t turn into, an accusation. How to cite All Quiet on the Western Front by E.M. Remarque, Papers

Essay about Body Ritual Among the Nacirema Essay Example For Students

Essay about Body Ritual Among the Nacirema Essay Would you want to live among the Naciremas? Why or why not? After reading Horace Miner’s Body Ritual Among the Nacirema I cannot say that I would want to be part of the tribe. A huge reason would be that I could never go from my own Christian faith to the religious practices of the Nacirema. My second reason for not wanting to be part of the tribe is that I could never be subjected to the horrific medical practices and â€Å"magical potions† used on every citizen in the tribe. One of the fundamental beliefs of the Nacirema is that â€Å"the human body is ugly and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease.† According to the Christian tradition, the human body is fallen and is therefore prone to disease and weakness; so in that respect, I do not completely disagree with the Nacirema. However, they seem to take the ugliness of the body to a whole new extreme. Their fascination with the mouth is extremely interesting. In today’s society we don’t necessarily see the mouth as an evil device, but more as a tool for communication and sexuality. The relationship between oral and moral characteristics is an interesting way to see the world. I had a lot of cavities before the age of 16, and I can honestly say that I wasn’t an overly evil child; it’s just a byproduct of not brushing and too much sugar. The Nacirema seem to read a lot into things that are just repercussions of a life lived. The medicine men seem to be taking extreme advantage of the people he is supposed to be taking care of. They seem to be out for more selfish pursuits as opposed to really sincerely helping the people. I could not believe that the sick had to give gifts before they could be â€Å"helped† and after they were â€Å"helped.† The fact that they experienced immense. .ianity in America is one of the â€Å"easiest† religions to pursue and to live. But people, in and out of the faith, still do not see any need for it. So I can honestly respect the Nacirema for their devotion and accountability to their faith even if I don’t really agree with what they are doing it for. There is absolutely no way I would ever want to be part of a culture like the Nacirema. I think we can learn a lot about devotion from this culture. They devote their lives to learning and living for what they believe which is very respectful in a lot of ways. However, the practices that require mutilation and torture are not things that I could ever be part of. No society should ever require their people to suffer in order to hold to their beliefs. It is interesting to study cultures so different from ours because it puts a lot of the freedoms we enjoy into perspective.

Opportunity cost is about the value of forgone production and these increases as the quantity of a good produced increase. The rationale here is that the law of increasing opportunity cost is fundamental to the production and supply of goods. In general, as the economy increases the quantity supplied of a good the opportunity cost increases. And if cost is higher, then sellers need a higher price, resulting in the law of supply. What difficulties might international non-native students have in Essay

What difficulties might international non-native students have in studying in an English Academic Culture at Undergraduate level How could these students best deal with such potential challenges - Essay Example As an example, Chinese students have a high respect for their teachers. They are not to question them or in other ways antagonize them because the teacher is the ultimate authority (Flowerdew and Miller 1996). This can be a problem for teachers in the West if they do not know this about Chinese people. This can also be a problem for the Chinese student in the Western classroom because when the teacher asks them to answer a question in class, it can be difficult and sometimes frustrating for the student and the teacher. Another challenge that non-native speakers can have is understanding their textbooks. In many situations, Western textbooks are used and often the lecturer does not use examples from the students culture. In this case, the student has no way to relate to the particular lesson. Flowerdew and Lindsay also point out that many non-native students have challenges understanding the material at a conceptual and linguistic level. They encourage lecturers to adapt their materia ls to their audience. They can do this by "adjusting their language and by simplifying and adapting what was in the set text" (126). It is important to also understand that non-English speaking students can have challenges that native English lecturers or professors may not understand at first. Robert Berman and Liying Cheng studied the perceived difficulties that graduate students had in moving towards their academic achievement. They found that both graduate and undergraduate students felt they had the most problems with understanding and speaking the language and that listening was easier than reading, writing or speaking in a different language (2000 28). They also found that the GPAs of these students suffered somewhat when they did not understand the language. In general, the non-native speakers who were in graduate school did better than those who were in undergrad. The difference between undergraduate and graduate could be that the

Memorable School Experience Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Memorable School Experience - Essay Example It was not long before school became a strong social outlet and I began to experience great success in my courses. I excelled academically and was barely cognizant of a group of students in courses I had that were quickly failing. One day I showed up and they had transferred to another class. I went on for much of the year concentrating on school. While I experienced relative success, towards the end of the year I increasingly felt something was missing in my life. While at the time I thought it was simply the need of a more robust social life, in retrospect I recognize that even at this early age I was experiencing a slight crisis of personal meaning. At nights I would sit by myself and think about the purpose of even being successful in school or life. Like a miniature Camus or Sartre, I gradually came to believe that there was no real meaning to life and that the books and schoolwork I had so diligently devoted myself to was nothing but me fooling myself that things mattered. I so ught out ways to counter this depression. Increasingly I looked to others thinking they new the answers. It was this that led me to one-day talk with the kids who had dropped out of my courses a few months earlier. To me it seemed as if they similarly rejected school and found a different path. One day during lunch I ate with them and then walked with them as they went behind the school. There was a pasture next door where they would sneak away and smoke marijuana. As we were returning I turned my head and noticed the school resource officer standing right beside us; he had watched us the entire time. I ended up receiving a week-long suspension. At the time I was truly furious with what had happened, but today I realize it was a turning point in my life. I consider Hartman’s story when he writes, â€Å"I became a bulldog and I spoke --truly spoke, clearly-- for the first time† (Hartman). After this incident I too found my voice. While at times I continued to question l ife, I learned to find my own meaning and appreciate everyday for what it is. My favorite teacher in high school was my junior year English teacher Mr. Harvey. Before enrolling in his course English had always seemed to be to be a study of grammar, structure, vocabulary, and ancient texts that held little resemblance to my modern existence. Throughout my junior year of high school I came to gain a much deeper appreciation for literature and poetry, and the ways that writing empower our lives. The first day of class we walked in and after head administered an introductory talk had everyone in the class stand up. We then walked into procession to a desk he had at the front of the room; we were instructed to step onto the desk and then jump off. The intention was so that the class would become more comfortable with jumping into the intellectual unknown. Throughout the semester Mr. Harvey regularly came up with novel and unique teaching methods. One day the class would be outside at the lake writing poetry, the next day we’d be analyzing Sylvia Plath indoors. While the course was filled with excitement, in retrospect perhaps the things I appreciate most about Mr. Harvey were the things I disliked at the time. Regularly he would choose a student’s essay and place it on a projector and correct it in front the entire class. Everyone dreaded having his or her essay being chosen, albeit the individual

Traditional Costing Method vs ABC

Traditional Costing Method vs ABC Introduction In this essay we will discuss the traditional costing method and consider the alternative method offered by Activity Based Costing (ABC) technique. We will discuss how the two methods differ from each other and also from the direct costing systems. The essay will also evaluate the value added by each costing system within a company’s decision making process, in terms of the accuracy of information they provide. Cost systems differ in terms of which costs are allocated to the cost objects i.e. product, service etc and also in terms of their levels of allocation ingenuity. There are three main cost systems in existence, namely, the direct costing system, the traditional absorption costing system and the activity based costing system. The direct costing system as suggested by its name, only allocates direct costs to the products or services; it does not attempt to allocate indirect costs. Therefore, it reports only the contribution attributable from the product or service towards indirect costs incurred by the business. It is often referred to as a partial costing system. The direct costing method is only pertinent for decision making process where the indirect costs are small part of the overall organisational costs or does not fluctuate greatly to changes in demand. Both the traditional and ABC system assign indirect costs to the product or service to give full costing information to the organisation in its decision making process. As illustrated in figure 1.0 above, there are two systems of assigning indirect costs to cost objects, namely, traditional costing system and ABC system. The traditional costing system has been in use since early 1900 and is still being used today. The traditional costing method relies to a large extent on the use of arbitrary cost allocation, commonly the use of either labour or material absorption rate. Decision Making In order for companies to make viable decisions, they require accurate product costs. Without sufficient allocation of indirect costs it would be difficult for companies to differentiate between profitable and loss-making products and services. Therefore cost systems needs to accurately reflect the consumption of resources by products, otherwise, product costs will be distorted and profitable products will be discontinued or rejected by the company and loss-making ones will be continued. Traditional costing system varies greatly in the level of sophistication to that of ABC in allocating indirect costs to the cost object. There is a general consensus that the traditional system is simplistic whereas ABC is more complex in its allocation technique. Therefore, traditional cost systems are inexpensive to operate, as it extensively uses an arbitrary cost allocation and results in low levels of accuracy. This in turn leads to higher cost of errors in product decisions being undertaken by organisations. ABC on the other hand, is more expensive to operate as it makes extensive use of cause and effect cost allocations (use of cost drivers), but results in greater levels of accuracy and leads to less errors in decision making process. Traditional vs. ABC The ABC system devises a number of activity based cost centres, whereas with traditional systems, overheads tend to be pooled by departments (cost centres). Traditional costing method like ABC system use a two-stage process to allocate indirect costs, with the first stage comprising of overhead being allocated to departments both production and service, the service departmental costs are subsequently reallocated to production departments. ABC, however, assigns overheads to individual activity instead of departments. The second stage of the allocation process involves allocating costs from individual departments under traditional method and activity cost centres under the ABC system, into the cost objects. The traditional system uses only a small number of second stage allocation bases, which are linked to volume produced. ABC system on the other hand uses a large number of second stage cost drivers; including non-volume based drivers i.e. number of production runs, number of purchase orders etc. In summary, the major distinguishing features of ABC system to that of the traditional method is that, a greater number of cost centres together with a variety of second stage cost drivers exist. This result in the ABC system delivering more accurate measurement of resources being consumed by a cost object, ensuring that management undertakes correct decisions. Conclusion ABC came to prominent during the 80s as a result of the limitations of traditional costing method and its value to decision making process of large blue chip organisations. In todays volatile market place where blue chip organisations are involved in the production and delivery of complex products and services, the traditional costing system and its use of volume based cost drivers like direct labour hours represent only a small fraction of total object costs. Volume based cost drivers assume that product’s consumption of overhead resources is directly connected to units produced. The use of volume based drivers to allocate indirect costs, which are considerably larger, results in inaccurate product costs and provides management with information which is of minute or no value. In fact the organisation runs the risk of making incorrect decisions about its profitable and unprofitable products and services which could result in financial ruin for the organisation and threaten its long term survival. Therefore, unsophisticated volume based overhead allocations using a declining direct labour cannot be warranted, principally when information processing costs are no longer a barrier to introducing more sophisticated cost systems like ABC. Furthermore, the intense global competitiveness within the market place had made decision errors due to poor cost information more probable and more costly. Therefore, with use of traditional costing system, misleading information is reported. However, ABC system recognises that overheads are caused by other factors, beside volume, and it allocates overheads based on cause and effects, resulting in more accuracy in organisational decision making. However, surveys of management accounting practices continue to present evidence of organisation’s still using traditional costing. Hughes, S.B. and Paulson Gjerde, K.A. (2003) carried out a survey of US manufacturing companies and reported 35 per cent of respondent using traditional costing and a further 30 per cent using a combination of traditional with ABC. Therefore, it is evident that traditional costing still provides information which is useful for blue chip Company’s decision making process, but they must use the information only with the knowledge of its drawbacks. Walt Disney and Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Walt Disney and the Grimm Brothers used their talents, and, with help, became some of the most famous children’s literature writers and business owners of all time. Many children have read Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales and watched Walt Disney’s films and cartoons. The creators have used their tales, films, and cartoons not only during their lives, but even now. Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901 to a German-Irish-Canadian-American family who lived in Chicago, Illinois. He had three brothers and one sister. His mother was a German-American woman named Flora Call Disney. His father was an Irish-Canadian man named Elias Disney (Encarta Encyclopedia 2). The school had seven different classes and was used to prepare people for college. â€Å"The four upper served to prepare for the university while pupils of the three lower ones did not aim at further academic studies. Unfortunately, Preceptor Zinckhan’s lessons had not been enough for Jacob and Wilhelm. Jacob was admitted to the lowest form only while... ... company when Frank Wells died. Mobile Phones Essay

My cell phone is my best friend. It’s my lifeline to the outside world. Carrie Underwood Like every body here my cell phone is my best friend. Thanks to martin cooper who has invented such a lovely gadget which has stored a mini world in it. and thanks to Android Inc who has given such a beautiful OS where we can download many apps. And coming to the topic now I am basically not so extrovert so that it helps me a lot in passing my time especially when I feel lonely. I never feel bad that I am staying away from home because whenever I want where ever I am I can Speak to my Parents and fight with my brother. And I can access to FB and can chat with all my friends. Where ever I go If I can see some thing beautiful I don need to worry that I am not carrying may camera with me. I have my mobile phone which can replace the camera and will give beautiful pictures. Unfortunately, although it may be a good idea for youngsters to have them, not one of them would accept a simple basic cell phone that only made calls and sent SMS would they? Although the increase in cell phone popularity may not have been expected to reach such a high level, the manufacturers have improved the cell phone enormously in a very short space of time. Manufacturers and Computer Experts have introduced the possibility of giving your phone personality by introducing cellular phone wallpapers. The internet has been a big help with obtaining wallpaper directly available online. Now, using the cell phones own camera, images can be used as wallpaper and even sent to other phones. If you prefer you can use an image you have captured previously on your own digital camera but the process takes a little longer to install. Why not add some text as well, possibly something funny to your cellular phone wallpaper, just to add a little more of your personality. Those people that have older models may not be able to do this but it really shouldn’t matter or make you feel as if you are missing out on something. Cell phone ring tones are another way of giving you phone that individual feel so even if your phone cannot change its background, you may find that the ring tone can be changed to make your model more individual. You must never forget what the cell-phone is actually for and remember that sending a SMS text does not need the most popular background or ring tone to help it on its way! Functionality does not necessitate cellular phone wallpapers; their use is only to dress up your phone and for the purpose of flaunting your cell-phones high technology features, nothing more. Try to bear in mind that not everyone is interested in your life and conversations so as a final point try to think of others when you use your phone. Many people will judge you by how you use your cell-phone as it shows what type of person you are. There are many locations where it is not suitable, or accepted that a cell phone should be used, and you will have more respect from others if you turn it off when you are in this type of situation. Good behavior can be catching and yours may lead others to do the same, be different, do not do what others do just because it is easier. It is a two-way thing, if you exhibit telephone etiquette, the people around you will do the same. Now with the fast paced life that most of us live with in juggling work and family we have entered into the mobile Internet era. I, myself thought I would never need a mobile phone with internet access so when I purchased my current phone which is a smart phone I was surprised how much I rely on the internet use.

Romeo Must Die Critiscism essays

Romeo Must Die Critiscism essays Action-packed, witty, sophisticated, interesting, riveting- these are just a few of the words that can be used to describe Romeo Must Die, a gripping film directed by mastermind Andrzej Bartkowiak. This superb film features an all-star line of actors, including the beautiful Aaliyah Haughton, the talented Jet Li, DMX, Anthony Anderson, Delroy Lindo, Russell Wong, Isaiah Washington, Edoardo Ballerini and Henry O. Aaliyah plays the part of Trish, the daughter of Isaak ODay (Lindo). Jet Li is Han Sing, the eldest son of Chu Sing (Henry O). DMX is a club owner, named Silk. Anthony Anderson plays the part of one of Isaak ODays business partners, as well as Trishs bodyguard. Isaiah Washington plays Mac, another business partner of ODay. Russell Wong plays the role of Kai, a business partner of Chu Sing. Edoardo Ballerini plays Vincent Roth, a cunning businessman with no ties to either of the family, with the exception of a mutual interest in money. Set in the year 2000, the majority of this film occurs at the Oakland- San Francisco waterfront, an area that contains properties that are of extreme value. A small part takes place in Hong Kong. The setting of the waterfront is greatly important to the film, as the main conflict concerns its properties. The main characters in this movie are Trish ODay, Han Sing, Kai, Chu Sing, Mac, Vincent Roth and Isaak ODay. Isaak ODay and Chu Sing are the heads of two feuding families, and are also major players in a business deal concerning waterfront properties, which are to be turned into a major moneymaking stadium. The ODays are African- American, and the Sings are Chinese. Issak ODay, though he appears tough, seems to be soft at heart, especially when it concerns his daughter Trish. Delroy Lindo does an excellent job of showing both sides of Mr. ODays character. You can tell just by loo...

Inequities and Discrimination in the Workplace essays

Inequities and Discrimination in the Workplace essays In countries such as Brazil, Bangladesh, Cyprus, Macao, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore, women earn 60 percent less than what men earn (256). Although U.S. figures arent as extreme as these, women face discrimination in the workplace. In 1999, women held only 5.1 percent of top executive management positions, and only 3.3 percent of companies highest paid workers were women (256). The term glass ceiling is used to describe the situation in which qualified women aspire to fill high positions but are prevented from doing so by the invisible institutional barriers (256). Discrimination of women in the workplace is a result of mens power and their reluctance to give up resources and their control over women and can be summed up for women of corporate America by looking at four categories. First, the quality of womens work tends to be undervalued. Frequently, studies asking participants to assess a piece of work have found that it is evaluated less favorably when said to have been done by a women than when the same piece is attributed to a man (257). Although the tendency to favor a mans work is not always found, when differences in evaluation are found they tend to favor men. Further, womens successes tend to be attributed to luck, and competent women are sometimes described as unfeminine. Societys distrust in womens abilities results from the stereotypical roles which label women as less assertive and expert than men. A second form of discrimination of women in the work place involves making unjustified assumptions about womens values. Whereas men are assumed to have values that tend to perpetuate the system, womens values are assumed to challenge it. Felicia Pratto and her colleagues conducted a study testing the status of the positions for which men and women were most likely to be hired. They found that women were favored to fulfil...

Responses to Readings and ID Craft Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Responses to Readings and ID Craft - Essay Example The authors candidly and sympathetically narrate the story of carol using simple but touching words that often makes the readers to long for more while sympathizing with carol. Thought provoking questions are used to intellectually and psychologically engage the readers and make them dig deeper into the story. For instance, â€Å"what do you think carol did next?† (pg. 265). Through the narration, the effects and benefits of sleep candidly stand out. The manner in which the story is presented is interesting and appealing due to the use of simple vocabularies that still convey a heavy and/or significant meaning. Due to environmental degradation and the consequential global warming, hurricanes have been prevalent causing loss of millions of innocent lives and undue suffering such as that witnessed in Indonesia during Katrina the deadliest and most disparaging hurricane. Philip Gerard steadily and merrily presents startling facts. He takes a scientific viewpoint to add flavor to the story while leaving no stone unturned. He uses a scientific register to indicate the many things that people do not know about hurricanes. He however manages maintain a calm mood throughout the story while using comic to deconstruct any seemingly provocative statements unlike Matt Thompson who engages the reader by means of mindboggling questions. The author has the society’s interests at heart and condemns governments’ failure to protect innocent civilians. Judith Ortiz indicates that she grew up in a strange place between two distinct cultures and languages. She narrates her fairy tale that she acquired from listening to stories. Her macho is evidently a result of her decision to stand by herself and defy all social norms. The contemporary society perceives women who commit deadly crimes as an outcast. On the other hand, women believe that they can perform better than men in any field as indicated by Maria Sabida who defies

Consider the role that agriculture plays in our society, including its Essay

Consider the role that agriculture plays in our society, including its enviromental implications - Essay Example Farming, which supplies life itself to the human race also contributes to soil erosion and polluted water. Farmers and large agricultural corporations must clear trees to find land that will sustain crops. Wind and water passes over barren land which initiates erosion, a condition which has been caused by poor farming practices or deforestation. Cattle are generally raised on the eroded, previously farmed land which further degrades the soil. â€Å"Such practices tend to lead to rapid soil degradation as most soils are too poor to sustain agriculture† (â€Å"Underlying Causes,† 1999). Eroding soil mixes with clean water supplies thus reducing the amount of available, life-giving water for an increasing number of people. The soil that is washed into the drinking water contains toxins, pesticides, fertilizers and industrial wastes which not only restricts the supply of potable water but makes its way into the watershed underground, rivers, streams, lakes and eventually in to the ocean and gulf waters which creates large areas of ‘dead zones’ where no living thing can survive. Soil degradation occurs when using chemical fertilizers which break down the chemical composition of the soil. â€Å"Many scientists observed a gradual decrease of soil organic matter content in soils, as well as a decrease of soil biological activity in particular, in relation to chemical uses† (â€Å"Soils retrogression†, 2007). The combination of erosion and degradation results in desert-like conditions where neither plants nor animals can survive but this problem can be overcome by implementing proven agricultural practices which enhance and rebuild the soil. â€Å"Rebuilding is possible through the improvement of soil structure, addition of organic matter and limitation of runoff† (â€Å"Soils retrogression,† 2007). These erosion reducing
